AFF Presents: TherActivist: They Them Theirs + Q&A with Dana TherActivist Johnson & filmmaker Khalid Akil White

Albany FilmFest and AC Library celebrate LGBTQIA+ Pride month with this short documentary film about Dana TherActivist Johnson, a Black transmasculine and nonbinary social worker and community leader who uses intersectional "therapeutic activism" or TherActivism to create positive change. You’re also invited to stay after the film for a live Q&A with Dana and filmmaker Khalid Akil White.

Filmed in the Bay Area, this compelling and personal documentary portrays Johnson's childhood in Oakland, their “coming out” experience, and their advocacy work for the Black LGBTQIA+ community.

Dana TherActivist Johnson, MSW (They/Them/Theirs) is a masculine of center gender non-binary community activist, author, documentary filmmaker, DEI Consultant and workshop instructor. The TherActivist embodies a "therapeutic activism" approach, while servicing and empowering people of color, LGBTQ+ communities, and marginalized populations. Dana serves as an LGBTQ Commissioner and PRIDE Initiative co-chair for the County of San Mateo, and Peer Support Worker for the Q- Corner, a LGBTQIA+ peer wellness center of County of Santa Clara. Dana has 17 years experience counseling and working with justice involved youth. T

Khalid White, Ed.D. (He/Him/His) is an award-winner in the fields of education, film and literature. He is an African American Studies Professor at San Jose City College. A career educator, Khalid began teaching in CA public schools in 2005. As an entrepreneur, Khalid owns the multi-media company Blkmpwr (Black Empower), LLC. www.blkmpwr.com The company focuses on education, empowerment, and equity. A proud HBCU alum and CA Community College advocate, Khalid is a co-founder of the Pipelines to Possibilities (P2P) program, connecting the two systems of higher education to increase faculty diversity. Khalid continues to work with education and community organizations advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice.
